This unit gave you an insight into some of the words that are spelled differently in American English dictionaries. Language is often seen as a powerful tool in terms of identity and it will come as no surprise that the move to distinguish American English from British English came when American won their independence. It serves as a reminder that history and language are ever intertwined. |
