Soft g: ge, gi and gy words
In this unit, you have learned about the soft g sound /j/:

- The soft /j/ sound can be produced by the letter j or g
- At the end of words, it is almost always spelled with the letters ge
- Before vowels a, o and u, the sound is usually spelled with the letter j
- Before vowels e, i and y, the sound is usually spelled with the letter g
- If you are adding a suffix that begins with e, i and y to a root word that ends ge, drop the e
- If you are adding a suffix that begins with a, o or any consonant, keep the e.
