While there are a few other ways of spelling the /or/ sound in English, there are three common situations in which it is likely that you will need to use the aw spelling pattern:

1) At the end of a word, like in paw and claw.
2) Before the letter ā€˜lā€™, such as in crawl and shawl.
3) Before the letter ā€˜nā€™, for example in lawn and yawn.

Occasionally the aw will also appear at the start of the word, like in awkward or awning.

raw Store raw meat away from cooked meat.
claw The bear's claw is razor sharp.
draw I won a thousand dollars in the draw.
thaw The deep snow will take a week to thaw.
straw The scarecrow was made from straw.
hawk We saw the hawk hover over its prey.
squawk We heard the parrot squawk.
dawn Dawn broke over the beautiful meadow.
fawn A young deer is called a fawn.
lawn Mow the lawn before it rains.
pawn A pawn is the small piece in a chess game.
yawn Tiredness makes you yawn.
drawn A line was drawn from coner to corner.
prawn We had a prawn cocktail at the wedding meal.
