Think of ck as a pair of letters that work together to create the /k/ sound. When you see ck at the end of a word, after a short vowel sound, it signals that the strong /k/ sound is coming.
For example:
In the word back, the ck follows a short /a/ sound to produce a /k/ sound at the end of the word.
In the word pick, the ck follows a short /i/ sound to produce a /k/ sound at the end of the word.
Use the spelling activities to work through the words in this list. Can you spot the short vowel sound in each one?
