Some words in English use ei to spell the long /a/ sound. These words include familiar terms like reins, veil, eight, and freight. In these words, ei creates a sound similar to the long /a/ as in day.
Here are a couple of examples:
reins – You use reins to control a horse.
veil – A veil is a piece of cloth worn by brides over their face.
These words follow a common pattern but may still seem tricky, so it's helpful to practice them.
