In most words the /w/ sound is simply spelled with the letter w. Some words need wh, however.
Say the words who, what, why and when aloud. |
Question words (see below) all need wh but other words will use wh too:
whale | whack | white | whiff |
We have to learn the other words – there are no rules to help us!
The Look, Say, Cover, Write, Check method can be one useful way to commit these spellings to our memories. |
Here are some of the more common wh words:
