Spelling the /w/ sound: w or wh ?

In most words the /w/ sound is simply spelled with the letter w. Some words need wh, however.

Say the words who, what, why and when aloud.


Question words (see below) all need wh but other words will use wh too:

whale whack white whiff

We have to learn the other words – there are no rules to help us!
