Following valuable feed-back from our users we have made some improvements to Spellzone.

Changes to Basic Level of Spellzone (Units 1-5)

We have re-structured the Basic Level of Spellzone (Units 1-5) and reduced the amount of text so that users can start the interactive spelling work sooner.

Here are the key changes to the Spellzone Units:

Old Unit Structure New Unit Structure

Unit 1 - Intro & Guide
Unit 2 - Tips to learn spelling

Unit 3 - Basic building bricks Unit 1 - Basic Building Bricks
Unit 4 - Consonant sounds Unit 2 - Consonant sounds, part 1
Unit 3 - Consonant sounds, part 2
Unit 5 - Consonant digraphs Unit 4 - Consonant digraphs, part 1
Unit 5 - Consonant digraphs, part 2
4-5 H - Homophones for Units 4 & 5 Unit 2-5H - A 'Beat the spellchecker!' test for words from Units 2 to and 5
All other Units remain unchanged.

How do these changes affect my results?

To minimise disruption and confusion to users the Spellzone system checks the date of when units were completed.

Work completed on Units 1 to 5 BEFORE 1st April 2014
Results are linked to the tests that you have worked on so we have moved the records accordingly.
For example, your results from the Unit 3 completed before 1st April will now appear as results in Unit 1 - the new home of these content and tests.
Similarly, a certificate for Unit 3 completed before 1st April will display the certificate as Unit 1.

Work completed on Units 1 to 5 AFTER 1st April 2014
If you now complete Unit 1 your results and certificate will display as Unit 1 and if you complete Unit 3 your results and certificate will display as Unit 3.

Note that the overall Spellzone course certificate should appear after 15 units or more are completed.

Changes to Look, Say, Cover, Write, Check

The Look, say, cover, write, check activity has been improved by adding the 'Say' feature.

To learn words using this activity we suggest you :

  • First look at the word
  • Then say the word or click on the speaker icon to hear it
  • Click on 'Cover' to hide the word and begin writing in the box
  • Click on 'Check' to check spelling, or on 'Look again'
  • Move on when finished by clicking on 'Next word'
